The positions are located in Kristiansand, Norway.

The applicants must qualify for admission to the PhD Programme in Information Systems, and must hold a master’s degree in Information Systems or in equivalent fields (see admission requirements).

Further provisions relating to the positions as PhD Research Fellows can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the Post of Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident, available for download at www.uia.no/vacancies

The appointees must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organised, focused and independent manner. During the assessment process, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s examination results as well as any previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised. The University, on its side, is committed to securing good supervision for the successful applicants. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews.
The topic for the dissertation should be in one of the following areas:

1) Enterprise Systems

There are considerable challenges with the adoption of enterprise systems, and many companies and public entities struggle with realizing benefits from the adoption of new enterprise systems. Also, increasingly enterprise systems are offered as services through Cloud computing.  We seek empirical studies of implementation and use of enterprise systems.

Possible topic areas are:
  • Implementation of enterprise systems and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
  • Enterprise systems delivered as a service through the “cloud” (Cloud computing)
  • BI (Business Intelligence)
  • Knowledge management and e-Collaboration

2) Process modelling and enterprise development

The implementation of new technologies potentially enables more efficient and stream lined production and service delivery.  This requires that the company manages to evaluate existing processes, map improvements and implement these.  The field of Business Process Management (BPM) describes integration of new Information Technology, data, processes and people in different roles.  The work is often based on process modelling as a basis for productivity and quality improvements. Important challenges in such projects are challenges with initiation of process development (e.g. in smaller companies), choice of methods for process modelling and involvement of users, process owners and commitment to change projects.

3) Systems development in practice

There is a need for empirical studies of systems development in practice.  Systems development encompasses organizational implementations of systems and solutions. Studies of practice may focus on which practices are used and how, and possible reasons why certain forms of practice are used. Studies of practice may also focus on the effects of specific practices for projects and organizations.

4) e-Government and e-Participation

e-Government focuses on how ICT can be used to transform public sector and its relations with citizens and the business community.  This includes internal aspects such as rationalization, process changes and reorganization, as well as development, implementation and use of new digital services with the intent of realizing benefits for the society as a whole. This also includes how ICT may be used to foster democratic goals such as increased participation in the public debate and decision processes and how ICT can be used to further development in the third world. Specific areas that can be studied include how access to the Internet and other possibilities of communication can influence development in knowledge, schools and health services and business opportunities.

Possible topic areas are:
-          Benefits realization
-          e-Participation
-          ICT for Development

Applicants must submit a project proposal whose scope lies within the abovementioned areas of priority. The project proposal should comprise a maximum of ten pages in length, including the reference list. The proposal must contain a preliminary presentation of the problematic approach, theoretical foundation, methodological approach and planned progression for the doctoral project. The quality of the project proposal will receive a high level of consideration during the application assessment process. Applications with particular relevance for business and society in the region may also be emphasised in the assessment process.

The successful applicants will have rights and obligations in accordance with the current regulations for the public service.
Appointments are made by the University of Agder’s Appointments Committee for Teaching and Research Positions.

The Norwegian public service is committed to reflecting the diversity of society in its workforce, and the personnel policy of the University of Agder aims to achieve a balanced workforce.
