Call for applications - EarthRights International’s Mekong School

Mekong School is now acceping applications for 2012

EarthRights International’s Mekong School is a unique training program for civil society advocates from the Mekong Region (China, Burma, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) who are working on environmental and human rights issues.  The seven month-long training program focuses on the impacts of large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly hydropower dams, and how citizens are engaged in advocating for more equitable development in the Mekong region.

Through a series of field visits, students examine the the potential impacts of various projects, such as the series of hydropower dams currently planned and under construction along the mainstream of the Mekong and its tributaries, on local livelihoods and the environment. Finally, program graduates focus on ways in which they can join together as alumni to advocate for greater public participation and transparency in Mekong development planning.

The goals of the Mekong School session are:

-          for students to develop an understanding of the impacts of hydropower dams and other large-scale development projects, as well as the views and approaches of various stakeholders

-         for students to understand and analyze what methods communities have utilized for greater protection of human rights and the environment

-          to develop students’ practical skill base in research, advocacy and campaign work; and

-          to develop strong relationships, networks and concrete campaign plans for implementation upon graduation and the students’ return to their respective countries.

Our ideal candidates are individuals who are working on environmental, human rights, or community development issues, who are enthusiastic about partnering with other activists from the region and who have the capacity to become effective community leaders and/or advocates.  We have no formal education requirements, but require basic English communications skills.  The training takes place in Chiang Mai, Thailand from June to December of each year, and includes a two-month practicum in which students return to their home countries to conduct field work. Housing, transportation, and a modest living stipend are provided to successful candidates.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.  For more information, please visit our website at www.earthrights.org.

To request an application form, please contact the Mekong School Coordinator at mekong@earthrights.org.

Call for proposals for NGOs (Non-State Actors) by European Commission

The European Commission has issued a call for proposals for for “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development (Development Cooperation Instrument) and Neighbourhood Civil Society Facility (European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument).

The global objective and the priorities of the present Call for Proposals are the concrete answer to the Structured Dialogue recommendations9 to the EU to “promote and support regular, structured and inclusive multi-stakeholder dialogues” through funding to “empower civil society organisations (CSOs) and local authorities (LAs) (particularly their platforms and representative organizations) to participate effectively in dialogues”.

The Priorities of this Call for Proposals:

(1) Institutional capacity building: reinforcement of internal structure and operating modalities of membership-based13 CSO networks (i.e. platforms, unions) with representativeness at regional14, continental and/or global level.15 Only proposals stemming from non-thematic16 CSO networks, with a majority of members based in partner countries17 will be considered.

(2) Empowerment of CSO networks representative at regional, continental and/or global level to participate effectively in dialogues with international organizations18 (both with global or regional scope19) and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. governmental authorities, private sector) and to have a significant impact on the regional, continental and/or global policy-making processes: actors of the initiatives should concretely strengthen their representativeness and the capacities to gather their constituencies’ views and to perform as strategic partners for key policy makers.

(3) Actions led at regional, continental and global level by relevant CSO networks, tackling problems common to more than one region (e.g. desertification, migration, water management, HIV/AIDS).  Multi-stakeholder campaigns will be supported. Service delivery actions will not be considered.

(4) Actions led by civil society organisations promoting the reinforcement of an enabling environment for civil society organisations’ activities in Neighbourhood countries.

(5) Actions led by civil society organisations which advance the political priorities of the Eastern Partnership and the priorities included in the Joint Communication “

This is a restricted call for proposals and only concept notes have to be submitted initially. All applicants need to register at PADOR before applying. The deadline to submit proposals is 1 February 2012, 16:00 Brussels date and time. For more information, visit this link.
